The Story of our Church
The first Baptist church was
formed in Brisbane in 1855. The
first Church building was opened
in Wharf Street in 1859. The
church then moved to the present
site on Wickham Terrace. This
impressive building stands on
one of the highest parts of the
city and was opened to the glory
of God in 1890. The first
minister was called in 1858 and
up to the present the Church has
been served successfully by
fourteen ministers. The
membership of the Church is
almost 300, and a number are
presently engaged in missionary
work in various places
throughout the world.
The Ministry of
our Church
The departments of the Church
include Sunday Morning Bible
Study, Christian Endeavour
Groups, Kids Church, Seniors
Group, Men’s Ministry, Ladies
Fellowships, Kids Klub and Youth
Group.
A
number
of home groups also operate
geographically across the city.
Through the weekly Bible study,
particular emphasis is placed on
helping people grow in their
walk with Christ. Helpful and
informative electives on a
variety of topics are made
available during the year.
The City Tabernacle Choir and
the talented musical ensemble
perform an excellent ministry of
music. The Church operates a
hostel for young ladies at
Willara House, providing
accommodation in a Christian
atmosphere for more than 20
students and girls in business
employment.
The Purpose of
our Church

Worship
Demonstrate God’s love in acts
of Service
Communicate God’s Word in
Evangelism
Educate God’s people in
Discipleship.
The Outreach of
our Church
Over recent years there has been
a move back to inner city
living. The City Tabernacle
Baptist Church is situated in a
strategic position to minister
to the needs of these city
dwellers. The Church recognises
that it is located in the heart
of a city which it desires to
touch with the Gospel of our
Lord.
“Towards 4000” is a
ministry of the Church directed
towards the 4000 postcode area
of the city of Brisbane. This
ministry is focused on the
residential city, the business
city and people in the medical
precinct right where the Church
is situated. It also endeavours
to train and encourage church
members to become involved in
practical ways to reach out to
the city of Brisbane. “Towards
4000” aims to build the Church
of Jesus Christ whatever
denomination the believer
chooses to attend.
